🌟 Types of Modal Verbs in English Grammar

Modals are auxiliary (helping) verbs used with the base form of the main verb to express ability, possibility, permission, necessity, advice, obligation, or politeness.

✅ There are 9 Main Categories of Modal Verbs:

1️⃣ Modals of Ability

→ Used to express someone's skill or capacity to do something.

Modals:

• Can
• Could

Examples:

• I can swim.> मैं तैर सकता हूँ।
• She could dance well when she was young.> जब वह छोटी थी तो वह अच्छा नृत्य कर सकती थी। 
• He can speak three languages. > वह तीन भाषाएँ बोल सकता है।

2️⃣ Modals of Permission

→ Used to ask or give permission.

Modals:

• Can
• Could
• May

Examples:

• May I come in? > क्या मैं अंदर आ सकता हूँ?
• Can I borrow your pen? ?> क्या मैं आपका पेन उधार ले सकता हूँ?
• Could I use your phone? > क्या मैं आपका फ़ोन इस्तेमाल कर सकता हूँ?

3️⃣ Modals of Possibility

→ Used to show something that is possible or likely.

Modals:

• May
• Might
• Could
• Can

Examples

• It might rain today. > आज बारिश हो सकती है।
• He may be late. > हो सकता है कि वह देर से आए।
• We could win the match. > हम मैच जीत सकते हैं।

4️⃣ Modals of Obligation & Necessity

→ Used to show rules, laws, or strong requirements.

Modals:

• Must
• Have to
• Should 

Examples:

• You must wear a helmet. > तुम्हें हेलमेट पहनना होगा ।
• I have to finish this work. > मुझे यह काम पूरा करना है।
• You should follow the rules. > तुम्हें नियमों का पालन करना चाहिए।

5️⃣ Modals of Advice & Suggestion

→ Used to offer suggestions or give advice.

Modals:

• Should
• Ought to
• Had better

Examples:

• You should sleep early. > तुम्हें जल्दी सो जाना चाहिए।
• He ought to study more. > उसे और अधिक पढ़ना करना चाहिए।
• You had better see a doctor. > तुम्हें डॉक्टर को दिखाना चाहिए।

6️⃣ Modals of Prohibition

→ Used to show that something is not allowed.

Modals:

• Must not
• Cannot

Examples:

• You must not cheat in exams. > तुम्हें परीक्षा में नकल नहीं करनी चाहिए।
• Students cannot use phones in class. > विद्यार्थी कक्षा में फोन का उपयोग नहीं कर सकते।
• You must not touch that wire. > तुम्हें उस तार को नहीं छूना चाहिए।

7️⃣ Modals of Probability & Deduction

→ Used to make guesses or draw logical conclusions.

Modals:

• Must
• Might
• Can’t

Examples:

• He must be tired after the trip. > वह सफर के बाद थक गया होगा। 
• She might be at home. > वह घर पर हो सकती है।
• That can’t be true! > यह सच नहीं हो सकता!

8️⃣ Modals of Willingness or Intention

→ Used to show readiness or future plans.

Modals:

• Will
• Would

Examples:

• I will help you. > मैं तुम्हारी मदद करूँगा।
• Would you like some tea? > क्या तुम चाय पीना चाहोगे?
• She will call you tomorrow. > वह तुम्हें कल फ़ोन करेगी।

9️⃣ Modals for Making Polite Requests / Offers

→ Used in polite communication.

Modals:

• Would
• Could
• Can
• Shall
• May

Examples:

• Would you help me, please? > कृपया, क्या आप मेरी मदद कर सकते हैं?
• Could you open the door? > क्या आप दरवाज़ा खोल सकते हैं?
• Shall I carry your bag? > क्या मैं आपका बैग ले जाऊँ?
