✅ What is a Superlative Adjective?
A superlative adjective is a special kind of describing word (adjective) that shows the highest degree or the most extreme quality of something in a group of three or more people, things, or places.
Forms of Superlative Adjectives
1. One‑Syllable Adjectives
- Add –est to the adjective.
- If the adjective ends in a single consonant (after a single vowel), double that consonant before adding –est.
Examples:
- tall → tallest (“He is the tallest boy.”)
- cold → coldest (“January is the coldest month.”)
- big → biggest (“That elephant is the biggest.”)
- Change –y to –i, then add –est.
Examples:
- happy → happiest (“She is the happiest person here.”)
- early → earliest (“This train is the earliest one.”)
3. Adjectives of Two or More Syllables
- Use most or least before the adjective.
Examples:
- beautiful → most beautiful > This is the most beautiful painting.
- expensive → most expensive > That watch is the most expensive.
- comfortable → most comfortable > This chair is the most comfortable.
- interesting → least interesting > That chapter was the least interesting.
