Using "Was" and "Were" in the Past Tense
"Was" and "Were" are past tense forms of the verb "to be", which we use to describe:
- A past state or condition
- A situation that happened in the past
- The identity or role of a person or thing in the past
- Location or position in the past
Basic Rule:
- Use "was" with I, he, she, it
- Use "were" with you, we, they
Structure:
✅ Affirmative Sentences
- I / He / She / It + was +rest of the sentence
- You / We / They + were + rest of the sentence
Examples:
- I was at home yesterday.
- She was happy with her test result.
- They were in the classroom.
- We were hungry after the game.
❌ Negative Sentences
- I / He / She / It + was not (wasn’t) + rest of the sentence
- You / We / They + were not (weren’t) + rest of the sentence
Examples:
- He was not ready for the exam.
- You weren’t at the party.
- I wasn’t tired last night.
